Guest Blog #68, Entry #510, April 30 2011
Happy DIY Saturday! As we round out the month of April, it is time to start getting your ideas for Spring gardening underway. While many people have the perfect conditions for gardening, other climates need protection from the elements and more control of the environment for optimal gardening.
Greenhouses are a great way to achieve optimal surroundings around your plants, as well as keep your plants from being chewed up by animals and pesky insects that would normally be found outside in the open air. Today, my Guest Blogger, Whitney Segura, shows you how to build your own greenhouse and a You Tube video gives you ideas for building one as well.
You Tube Video – Building a Greenhouse
Hobby Greenhouse Building & Construction Planning 101
Owning a hobby greenhouse is probably every gardening enthusiast’s dream. This is because greenhouses allow you to grow the kind of plants that you want at any time of the year under controlled conditions.- But before you rush into constructing one, here are some very important points that you need to determine first before starting anything and if you get stuck read additional greenhouse building plans.
If gardening really is your hobby, then it is best to invest in the biggest greenhouse that you can find.
- It may be an expensive initial investment yes, but it will be more costly to get a smaller spaced greenhouse and have it expanded later.
- Most of the time, you are bound to fill up your greenhouse space in no time at all so it’s best to utilize what space that you have rather than invest in more costly expansions in the future.
Heating and ventilation requirements
This is probably one of the most important parts of a greenhouse.
- The real essence of greenhouses is the ability to grow plants at a controlled condition and this can only be done through proper heating and ventilation systems.
- There are actually a number of heating systems available in the market – from the natural gas, electric, gas and propane heating.
- It is just a matter of your budget and the availability of these heating systems in your area.
- One of the most convenient systems to use is the electric system but can be a problem during blackouts and power shortages.
Siding materials
The kind of siding materials you use is very important because this will affect the amount of sunlight penetrating into your greenhouse during the day.
- As much as possible, you would like to have the most amount of sunlight into your greenhouses because it is essential for plant life.
- The best siding option here would be glass. Aside from light diffusion, insulation is also an important factor.
- Siding materials should be able to keep your greenhouses well insulated and prevent too much temperature fluctuation, which could damage or even kill your plants.
Greenhouse Framing
Frames should be strong enough to support your entire structure during harsh weathers – from heat, rain or snow.
- The choice of framing materials will depend in the kind of siding you use. Use stronger frames for heavier sidings.
- Wood is great aesthetic-wise but PVC and aluminum frames are mode durable and requires less maintenance.
There are actually hobby greenhouse kits available in the market.
- They come complete with materials and instructions and with pre-measured materials so make sure that the kits you buy fit your space.
- This can save you the hassle of buying and selecting materials one by one. But if you want a more customized greenhouse and love the work, then by all means, go the other way and start your greenhouse from scratch.
Aside from these, you also need to keep in mind that some areas may require local building permits for greenhouse constructions so check if your local government requires them or not before starting the work.
So keep these tips in mind and do not forget to have fun. Constructing greenhouses are just as fun as planting on them.
Whitney Segura is an expert in building a greenhouse and helping others learn with hobby greenhouse plans, the alternative is to go buy rion hobby greenhouse in a store. For more DIY Saturday‘s on Stagetecture, click here.
Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas
Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas
Like all good New Mexico food, these Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas are simple, earthy, and delicious. Its heat depends on the chiles; go with Anaheims if you scorch easily. Prep and Cook Time: 50 minutes. Notes: You'll need about half the meat from a roasted 2 1/2- to 3-lb. chicken. Baked enchiladas can be frozen for up to 1 month. Photo by: Annabelle Breakey
- YIELD: Makes 5 servings; 10 enchiladas (serving size: 2 enchiladas)
- TOTAL:50 MINUTES
- COURSE: Main Dishes
Ingredients
- 1 pound roasted skin-on green New Mexico chiles
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 5 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 3 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth, divided
- 10 (7- to 8-in.) corn tortillas
- 2 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken (see Notes)
- 2 cups coarsely shredded cheddar or jack cheese, divided
- Sour cream
Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 400°. Peel, stem, seed, and chop chiles.
2. Heat oil and butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add chiles, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, 3 minutes. Add 1 cup chicken broth and simmer until reduced by one-third, about 10 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, prepare tortillas: In a small frying pan, bring remaining 2 cups chicken broth to a gentle simmer. Working one at a time, very briefly dip tortillas into broth to barely soften. Transfer each tortilla to a large baking sheet (you may need 2 or 3 sheets). Do not overlap or tortillas will stick.
4. Divide 1 1/4 cups cheese equally among tortillas and top each with shredded chicken, dividing evenly. Wrap tortilla around filling and transfer, seam-side down, to a 9- by 13-in. baking dish.
5. Pour chile sauce over enchiladas and top with remaining 3/4 cup cheese. Bake until cheese is bubbling and browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with sour cream.
Cooking with chiles
This recipe is best when made with New Mexico chiles, preferably northern varieties such as Chimayo. Anaheim chiles, which are a New Mexico variety, are widely available throughout the West and make a fine substitute for northern green chiles—roast them over a stovetop burner or under a broiler to blacken the skins. (And if you're sensitive to chiles, wear gloves when handling.) Canned green chiles just don't cut it here.

Hey get this one, my wife tells me of a "Mexican" in Colorado that tried to pay for dog food with his food stamps but couldn't. So he went and got 7 T-bone steaks and commenced to feed them to his dog in front of everyone in the Walmart parking lot. Any comments?

Toilet paper survey over or under which is the proper way?
Toilet paper survey over or under which is the proper way?
Essential Life Lesson #1: Over is Right, Under is Wrong
As part of our ongoing effort here at Current Configuration to make your life not only better, but also 10% more crunchy, we’re offering you this first installment of what will be an ongoing series of Essential Life Lessons. Kicking off this series will be a critical but even-handed examination of a common misunderstanding that occurs in a realm of many misunderstandings: the bathroom.Put simply, there is a right way to hang the toilet paper, and a wrong way. Read on to determine the status of your own roll.
Toilet paper has a natural curve, a way of being that lends itself to certain orientations on the toilet paper spool.* If handled with skill and knowledge, it can provide an abundance of both sanitation and comfort, quilted together in each square of pillowy ply. If handled with clumsy ignorance, or worse, carelessness, it will beset the user with pain, filth, and frustration. Don’t let it end this way, with you curled on the tile floor of the stall, weeping in frustration, covered in wasted papier de toilette. To convince you, we’ve created some diagrams, harnessing the power of SCIENCE, to demonstrate the natural benefits of the over hanging method. First, we examine the optimal viewing benefits of the over hanging method.
Below are examples of the helpful and fruitful over-hung method on the left and the annoying and detrimental under-hung method on the right.
Notice the dramatic difference in the amount of visible toilet paper. Ironically, it is the over-hung toilet paper that has both the most visible free sheetage and the least amount of sheetage free from the roll to do it. Now, this may not seem like a big deal on its own, but in these extra sheets lies your undoing. Observe.
We here at Current Configuration, for the purposes of ease and expediency, do the one-handed tear (okay, really, it’s just me, but bear with me, er, us). The one-handed tear is a quick maneuver that takes advantage of the perforated squares, allowing your bundle of toilet paper to be liberated with one quick swipe of the arm. This is the foundation of bathroom ease, the cottony bedrock on which enjoyment rests in the restrooms of many nations.
The one-handed tear relies on a quick and forceful motion directed either away from or towards the tear-er. The forces applied in this motion are great and, like the atom, are not to be trifled with. The natural curve of the over-hung method allows the roll to stand fast after a one-handed tear, but the under-hung method creates a calamitous tendency in the roll. This tendency can only lead to this:
Wasted paper, frustration, the destruction of our forests. While we realize that it is possible to execute a one-handed tear on an under-hung roll, this is a game of sanitary Russian roulette. You are bound to lose eventually, and there is no re-rolling an unwound toilet paper roll. The results will only cause you grief. Don’t let this happen to you. Restroom attendants, janitors, maids, facilities crews, and responsible toiletowners take note: Don’t use the under-hung method for your toilet paper rolls. It leads to the destruction of our precious resources and the pillars of civilization as we know it!
*Does that thing have a proper name?
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Because you demanded it, we bring you the Overhanging Public Service Hanger Brochure.

Public Invited to Tour Atlanta Georgia Temple
07 April 2011 — Salt Lake City
The public is invited to tour the newly renovated Atlanta Georgia Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is the first time the building has been opened to the public since its original dedication in June of 1983. The First Presidency of the Church has announced a public open house beginning Saturday, 9 April 2011, and continuing through Saturday, 23 April 2011, excluding Sundays. Public tours are available on Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets to the open house are required, but free, and can be obtained by visiting lds.org/reservations.
The temple is located in Sandy Springs, just off Highway 400 near Abernathy Road NE. Tours consisting of an 11-minute video presentation followed by a 30-minute walking tour will begin at the meetinghouse adjacent to the temple. Free parking is available on site.

Additional Resources
An estimated 2.5 million Latter-day Saints have entered the Atlanta temple since it was originally completed and dedicated in 1983. The Georgia building was the 21sttemple of the Church worldwide and the first built in the southern United States. Today there is at least one temple in every adjoining state, in Birmingham, Alabama; Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee; Raleigh, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina and Orlando, Florida. Worldwide there are 134 operating temples, with another 26 announced or in some phase of construction, including a second temple in Florida, to be located in or near Ft. Lauderdale.
Latter-day Saint temples differ from the meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord” where the teachings of Jesus Christ are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve their fellow man.

Acai Berry Diet Exposed: Miracle Diet or Scam?
Acai Berry Diet Exposed: Miracle Diet or Scam?
As part of a new series: "Diet Trends: A look at America's Top Diets" we examine consumer tips for dieting during a recession
Julie Ayers is a Pleasant Grove native and investiages this new diet for herself.
We here at Channel 5 are a little skeptical and aren't sure that we've seen real proof that these pills work for weight loss. So we decided to put these products to the test with our own Julie Ayers, a Pleasant Grove native. What better way to find out the truth than to do our own study?
To get started, I volunteered to be the guinea pig. I applied for a free trial of the Lean Spa with Acai. While there are many Acai berry ads online, Lean Spa with Acai is one of the most credible and trustworthy suppliers on the market. It included the free trial of the product and it did not try to fool me into agreeing to additional hidden offers. Another reason why I chose Lean Spa with Acai is
because it is the most concentrated and purest acai product on the market, giving me the most accurate results for my test.
Here is what Lean Spa with Acai claimed on their website...
- Accelerates Fat Loss
- 4 Times More Weight Loss Than Diet And Exercise
- Boosts Energy
- Rich in Antioxidants
The idea behind combining the products is that while the Acai Berry encourages weight loss and increases energy, the colon cleanse helps rid your body of toxins and allows your body to work and burn calories more efficiently. I chose South Beach Java Cleanse to test.
Here is what South Beach Java Cleanse claimed on their website...
- Helps Eliminate Bad Toxins that have Built Up Over the Years
- Removes 'Sludge' from the Walls of the Colon
- Helps Get Rid of Gas and Bloating
- Helps to Regulate the Metabolism
Putting Acai to the Test Both the Lean Spa with Acai and South Beach Java Cleanse arrived within 4 days of having placed my order online for the bottles.
The bottle of Acai and the South Beach Java I received had enough for a full month's supply, which worked out perfectly as I was to follow the supplement routine for 4 weeks time and document my progress throughout.
My Test
4 Week Acai Berry Diet: Lean Spa with Acai + South Beach Java Cleanse
My Results
Week One
After one week on the diet using both products I was surprised at the dramatic results. My energy level was up, and I wasn't even hungry, an apparent side effect of the Acai Berry which curbs the appetite.
I honestly felt fantastic.
And I didn't even change anything about my daily routine. On day 7 I got on the scale and couldn't believe my eyes. I had lost 9 lbs. But I still wasn't convinced as they say you lose a lot of water at the beginning of any diet. I wanted to wait and see the results in the upcoming weeks. But it sure was looking up! I now weighed under 140 lbs for the first time in years!
Week Two
After two weeks of using both supplements, I started the week off with even more energy and was actually sleeping more soundly than before. I was no longer waking up during the night and tossing and turning because my body was actually able to relax (this is a result of getting rid of the toxins I think). I still managed to lose another 7 lbs, putting me at an unbelievable 16 lbs of weight loss, in just 2 weeks.
I must admit that I'm starting to believe that this diet is more than just a gimmick.
Week Three
After 3 weeks all my doubts and skepticism had absolutely vanished! I am down 2 full dress sizes, after losing another 6 lbs. And I still have a ton of energy. I no longer need that cat-nap around 3pm in the afternoon! And I am even noticing that my stomach is digesting food so much better. No bloating or embarrassing gas after I eat!!
Week Four
After the fourth week, my final results were shocking. I lost an unbelievable 22 lbs since starting the Lean Spa with Acai and South Beach Java Cleanse diet! Actually everyone at Channel 5 is kicking themselves for not having volunteered to be the guinea pig. Using the Lean Spa with Acai and South Beach Java Cleanse in week 4 I lost a couple more lbs. But to be honest I really didn't have much more than that left to lose. Given the results and the added health benefits I will continue to use the products indefinitely!
I couldn't be any happier with the results.
I Lost 22 lbs in 4 Weeks, No Special Diet, No Intense Exercise
After contacting both companies, we've talked them into special pricing for viewers of UT's Channel 5 -- just use the links below for our deal. Good luck with your weight loss,
