How to Install Interior Stone Veneer (Video)

We made it to #1 of Stagetecture’s Best of 2011! These last 5 days I have showed you the top 5 posts of 2011 that were chosen by you, my readers. Today, we are at #1, and it is a DIY Saturday on how to install stone veneer in their home. While we all love the look of beautiful stone in our homes, veneer is a great option that is more affordable, and we can install it ourselves! Congratulations to all you DIY’ers, once again proving that homeowners love their DIY projects.

Happy DIY Saturday! Today celebrates our 40th DIY Saturday, and we have covered so many projects. I hope you have taken advantage of them, or at least they’ve given you ideas for what projects you will be starting soon.
As we continue through ‘home renewal’ month, I thought about the need to bring your outdoors inside your home, as well as bring your indoors outside. This creates a union between your inside and outside that feels and looks great. Today, we’re going to see how to install interior stone veneer to a wall.
stone veneer white Stone veneer options come in a variety of colors
Back in July of 2010, DIY #10, showed you how to install stone veneer panels. Today, I will show how to choose each veneer rock, as opposed to an entire panel.

How to Install Stone Veneer: Preparation

How to Install Stone Veneer: Installation

How to Install a stone veneer wall. Step by step directions from eHow.com

Prepping the Wall Surface

Locate the wall studs using a stud finder and mark with an “X” on the ceiling. Beginning at the bottom of the wall, staple builder’s felt horizontally, overlapping the felt 2 inches. Use continuous sections of felt across the wall with no vertical seams. Vertical seams can allow water from the mortar to damage the underlying surfaces.Nail metal lath over the felt, with the “cups” of the lath toward you and facing upward toward the ceiling. Secure with roofing nails to the wall studs. Lath will feel rough to the touch, when running your hand downward. The “cups” in the lath are designed to hold the mortar in place and not allow it to slip downward on the wall.

Applying Mortar Scratch Coat

Mix veneer mortar to the consistency of creamy peanut butter and apply to the metal lath with a finishing trowel. Use a downward motion initially to fill the “cups” in the lath with mortar. Continue adding mortar until a thickness of ½ inch spreads evenly over the lath. Use a notched tiling trowel to comb across the mortar while still pliable to create grooves for better adherence of the mortar applied to the stone veneer. The scratch coat of mortar will dry overnight.
stone veneer rugged Stone veneer interior walls can take on a rugged appearance too!

Designing the Layout of the Stones

On a flat area, use painter’s tape to outline an area the size and dimensions of the wall being covered with the stone veneer. Lay the stone in this area until you create an attractive arrangement. Leave an area between the stones the width of a finger and stagger the shapes and sizes of the stone.

Installing the Stone Veneer

Mix the mortar to a pudding consistency. Spray the back of each stone and the wall with water. Begin at the bottom of the wall. Apply mortar around the edges of the backside of the stone, leaving an opening in the center. Press the mortared stone against the wall, wiggling it back and forth slightly. Mortar will ooze out on all sides. Do not get mortar on the face of the stone; it will stain. Leave a space the width of a finger between the stones. Use an angle grinder with a diamond wheel to make any necessary cuts to the stones. Continue until all stones are in place.Use a striking tool and a whisk broom to remove excess mortar from between the stones to allow room for the application of grout. Allow the stone veneer wall to dry overnight.
stone veneer stairs Full wall and half wall applications with a stone cap.

Grouting the Stone Veneer Wall

Fill a grout bag with mortar mixed to a pudding consistency. Squeeze the mortar out the tip of the grout bag into the opening between the stones, beginning with the vertical joints and then the horizontal. Allow the grout to protrude slightly above the stones. Allow the grout to cure one hour and use a striking tool to dress the grout. To give a classic look to the grout, use the striking tool to remove some of the grout, slightly recessing the grout below the level of the stone. For a rustic look, dress the grout level to the face of the stone. Brush the grout joints with a whisk broom to create a natural finish. The wall will cure in 48 hours.

5 Ways to Prepare for a DIY Weekend During the Week

We continue with Stagetecture’s Best of 2011! At the #2 spot is dedicated to all of you DIY’ers who are trying to find ways to make your home remodeling project take less time, money, energy, and oh yeah… preparation! It’s not a surprise that the second most viewed post of 2011 was how to prepare for a DIY weekend during the week. I for one have found these 5 tips will make you look forward to your DIY project, save more money/time and you may not have to travel back and forth to the home improvement store 10 times in one day… with these tips, maybe only twice. :)

I have always been a strong advocate for learning to do things yourself. Whether it’s to have the knowledge for yourself or it’s to empower you to take on greater challenges… doing things yourself will make you feel better and the rewards are immeasurable!
Tomorrow is already Stagetecture’s 36th D.I.Y. Saturday! That means for 9 months you have been armed with great DIY projects to get things done! After 9 months of bringing you DIY ideas, I started realizing that many people wait until the weekend before they arm themselves with materials, instructions… even what project they are going to do!
I thought I would give you 5 ways to prepare yourself during the week so when you get to the weekend you are ready to start when the rooster crows!
DIY tools Get yourself ready this week for your DIY weekend project

______________

5 Ways to Prepare for your DIY Weekend during the week

1.) Pick your project early:

While this may not stand true for small projects, it can certainly help for larger projects. Instead of trying to pick your project on the same day you gather materials, go to the home improvement store and start – take the week to pick your project. Research the difficulty level, research how many people you will need, and the pros and cons of taking on the job yourself.

2.) Ask for help before you need it:

Just because it is termed “Do it Yourself” does not literally mean to do it yourself! Ask for friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers help before the weekend! Ask people you know have the time, energy, and patience to help you through your project. If you can’t find someone to help for this weekend, consider holding off on your project until you do.
Attic space Ask for help from friends and family BEFORE you need them!

3.) Budget and buy supplies now:

Not only does traveling to the home improvement store on the weekend make your day seem longer, but its THE busiest time at the home improvement stores! If you can buy your materials during the work week, you will be surprised how quickly you get in and out, and how much more store associates can help you if you need it.
Budget how much you plan to spend now. If you wait until the weekend, you will most likely spend more because you have 50 more things to think about. Plan during your lunch break at work, when you have quiet, time, and a clear head.

4.) Prepare your space during the week:

Depending on your project, you may be able to start preparing the space for your project now. For example if you are painting the basement, why not start preparing the space now? Taping up trim, removing switch plates and moving and covering furniture with drop cloths is time consuming. Start little by little during the week and see how much smoother your weekend project will run.
DIY floor Prepare your room in advance for ease of construction over the weekend

5.) Get plenty of rest:

While many DIY projects don’t require you to lift 2 ton rocks, there is something to be said for being physically ready for your project. Many repetitive motion projects, such as painting, sanding, hammering, etc.. will make you use muscles that you forgot you had! Ensure you get plenty of rest to arm your body with endurance and stamina to get started and finish your DIY project. You also will make less mistakes when you are alert and not tired and groggy!

Your basement is one of the few rooms of your home that may or may not have seen a lot of activity this holiday. If you are cleaning up from the holidays and beginning to put holiday decor away, have you thought about where it will all go? Even if you have a place, is organization in your basement an area that could be improved?

Here’s a post from the archives last year, that I think is very fitting for all of you – getting ready to bring in the New Year and pack up from the holidays. Trust me, if you have a basement, storage closet, or garage… this one is for you!

We are down to the last DIY Saturday on organization for January’s organization month! It has been great:
I showed you how to:
Today we are going to focus on the very bottom your home, the basement. The basement is one of the rooms of your home that can either be finished off to use as livable space, or it can truly be used for storage. Either way, getting to the point of being able to use it is another story.
basement _finished Let's get your basement organized to be able to enjoy it!
It always helps to see someone else have a method to organizing their basement contents. Here is a You Tube video that shows how to sort your contents into three areas, organize, label and store them.
Today I found an article from Martha Stewart on organizing your basement.
The first step to organizing the basement is to take a rough inventory of what you have: Decide what you can give away or throw out, such as old bikes, children’s toys, and broken tools.

Clean and Paint Walls and Floor

Painting the interior walls and floors will cut down on dust, mildew, and dampness, making the basement easier to keep clean. First, clean the walls and floor thoroughly with detergent and water (follow with a diluted bleach solution if mold is present); fill pores and gouges with grout or resin filler; then apply latex or oil-based paints or sealants.

Set Up Shelving

Wood or metal shelving units placed near the stairs can hold wine, paper towels, bottled water, cleaning supplies, and other bulk items where they will be most accessible. Stash a flashlight here, so it’s handy for power outages. On long-term storage shelves, use waterproof plastic utility crates or steel storage trunks to hold sports equipment or other seasonal items, tools, hardware, and cans of paint. Be sure your shelves are adjustable, to accommodate outdoor furniture and large boxes.
basement _DIY Use shelving to organize your basement contents

Install Pegboard

To keep loose items from falling off the backs of freestanding shelves, tack pegboard behind the shelves. Install pegboard on the wall in places where you need to hang things: an ironing board and a few shelves for light objects in the laundry area, for example.

Use Ceiling Space

Hang garden hoses, chairs, and lighting fixtures from joists in the ceiling. Avoid hanging items from pipes — the resulting stress on the pipes could damage them

Fire

Never store highly combustible items in your basement unless they are in a closed cabinet. Keep a clutter-free zone at least 18 inches deep around your furnace. Have a fire extinguisher handy (CO2 extinguishers are best; they don’t harm electrical systems). Install a smoke detector.
basements_DIY2 Basement storage can also be used for workshops, workout area, etc…

Gases

Check with your county extension agent to see if carcinogenic radon gases from uranium tailings in the soil are a problem in your area. If so, buy a tester; if you have elevated radon levels, hire an expert to vent the gases outside. Carbon monoxide is another gas that can be deadly, so install a carbon-monoxide detector.

Electricity

Install ground-fault-interrupting electrical outlets throughout the basement to prevent shock from improperly grounded equipment. Elevate the washer and dryer several inches off the floor to prevent electrical shock during flooding. Have a furnace shut-off switch installed at the top of the stairs.

Happy Wedding Day to Prince William & soon to be – Princess Kate! Unless you live under a rock, today is the wedding day for the Royal Couple. Today on Stagetecture, I thought I would get into the nostalgia of wedding grandeur and show inspiring outdoor wedding decor.
There is already a beauty behind wedding decorations, and when you move the celebrations outside amongst nature, the decorations can get more creative and more beautiful! Today, my Guest Blogger, Bridget Mora shows you how decorating for an outdoor wedding with hanging decor can make a wedding stunning!

When you look at pictures of beautiful outdoor weddings, one thing that many have in common is decorations suspended from the trees. Colorful or lit-up decorative elements are a fantastic way to create a mood, define an outside space, and bring your wedding colors into nature. Get inspired with these festive ideas for hanging decorations for outdoor weddings.

Parasols are a fantastic design element for weddings. Paper parasols in bright hues are an easy and affordable way to quickly transform a space. Imagine how festive they will look hanging from the trees over the dinner tables at an outdoor reception. You can really create a mood by the colors which you select for the parasols. A combination of hot pink, yellow, and orange will feel summery and upbeat – just right for a wedding with a tropical or fiesta theme. Parasols in cool colors such as blue, green, and purple will give the space a calmer feeling, while classic white parasols will feel fresh and elegant. Consider getting a few extra parasols to use as props in photographs of the bridal party; a bevy beautiful bridesmaids in their pretty dresses and special bridesmaid jewelry will look absolutely charming framed by colorful parasols.
For the DIY bride, paper pom poms are an excellent outdoor wedding decoration. They can be used in a number of different ways. Hang long strings of smaller pom poms behind the ceremony altar to define the space. Larger poms in a variety of colors will look fantastic suspended from the trees around the reception site. Paper pom poms tend to look best when they are very colorful, so don’t be afraid to go bold with your color choices. Pink, yellow, and green would be a delightful palette for a spring afternoon wedding, aqua and cherry red pom poms will say “retro chic”, and blue and orange poms will look modern and fun.

It is a simple idea, but twinkling white lights are always gorgeous for outdoor weddings. Consider using larger globe lights for a unique take on this classic decorating idea. “Icicle” lights, which are made to hang off of rooftops can also be used to great advantage for a wedding. Let them drip from trees, hang over the edge of the bar, and flutter down from the edge of a square arbor. The best time to stock up on large quantities of white lights is right after Christmas. Just be sure to find strings of lights which are rated for outdoor use, and always be aware of the maximum number of strands which can be safely strung together.
For a preppy or nautical wedding in an outdoor space, colorful bunting or nautical flags make a terrific addition to the decor. Hang a row of bunting diagonally over the tent support lines to make them more attractive (and more visible so guests do not trip over them). Suspend bunting with messages over tables with sayings like “guest book” or “dessert”. A “Just Married” bunting would be charming over the head table. For a more decidedly nautical flavor, use classic nautical flags. They would be ideal for a wedding on the deck of a yacht club or other seaside location. You can have fun spelling out the names of the bride and groom, wedding, or another message with the flags. Just think how great they would look for a wedding with the bridesmaids in navy dresses and pearl bridal jewelry, an anchor motif wedding cake, and a piece of rope for the groom’s boutonniere.
wedding outdoors Outdoor wedding decor can be simple but elegant
Plenty of other things make great hanging decorations for outdoor weddings. Suspend elegant chandeliers from trees or tents, use colorful paper Chinese lanterns, or beautiful luminaries. The extra attention you give to hanging decorations will definitely make your outdoor wedding space look exquisite

If your home is truly your castle, then isn’t it important that it’s properly protected? Beyond your run-of-the-mill burglar alarm, many homeowners today are choosing to build safe rooms to bring added security and peace of mind. These spaces, which can often be housed in already-existing rooms of most homes, serve as safe shelters against intruders and extreme conditions such as tornadoes or hurricanes.

Real indoor plants. Yes I said it, real indoor plants; but don’t be put off by this thought. I know, I know, artificial plants are so much easier to look after and can look just as good as real plants.
There’s none of that watering every day or adding miracle grow when it looks like it’s about to die on you, but it really is about time that everyone realizes the benefits having real indoor plants.
Now, I’m not saying you need to surround yourself with plants so that your home becomes a green house, just a couple here and there will reap the benefits.

plants interiors green Brighten your interiors with plants
Image via
Indoor plants are not only limited to houses, indoor office plants are becoming an integral part of any office.

Home & Office Benefits

More and more companies are realizing the benefits and harvesting the rewards that come with them. As we all know, well some of us know, plants improve the quality of air we breathe. Many of us sit in a building all day, so having these plants indoors will improve our air quality.
They filter, purify and clean the air, they absorb toxins through their leaves and they emit beautiful. How nice of them, right? And they can do all that just by sitting there!
Many of companies have landscaped their office interiors with plants large and small, is there something they know that you don’t…?
  • Extensive research has shown that indoor plants have a calming effect, reducing stress levels. Pulse rates and blood pressures were reduced when workers were sat in a planted area, especially those sat behind a computer screen for more than 4 hours a day.
  • Did you know the interior environment can be 5-7 times more polluted than the outside environment? Because plants return over 90% of the water we give them, back into the atmosphere, they clean our air, reducing staff illness significantly.

plants interiors green3 Clean up your indoor air with plants
Image via
  • Most office buildings are lacking fresh air and natural light. Workers will often complain of headaches, blocked sinuses and dry throats, these common complaints were decreased by an impressionable 25% due to having plants around. If you’re in management, wouldn’t it be great if your workers took less sick days?
  • Now, all of us have been there, that constant humming sound, background chatter and office equipment whirring when you are trying to work, research has shown that plants reduce noise.
  • I know, it sounds pretty unbelievable, but they do play a huge part in noise reduction. As for the science behind it… Plants absorb, then diffract and reflect sound waves, resulting in reduced levels of noise, meaning a calmer, less noisy and more productive working environment.

plants interiors green2 Plants for home or office environments
Image via
So there you have it, indoor office plants will increase staff productivity by 12%, boost comfort levels and significantly reduce employee down time.

Professional Landscaping

More importantly they will improve your corporate image, just for looking great! You should also consider getting your office professionally landscaped, there are companies out there that offer this service, not only do they have years of experience, but they will project-manage, source and install your exhibit.
They also return again and again to water, clean, prune and feed your office plants, keeping your corporate plants looking great and healthy. This saves you the time and labor, because let’s face it looking after plants can be a bit of a drag sometimes, especially when you have a whole office full.
Kate Dawson is a keen blogger and writes about the importance of indoor plants. She has a strong interest in interior landscaping and office plants, focusing on the science behind the plants within the design of office interiors.

The New Year is definitely an exciting time for all of us. It means new chances and new opportunities for us to be able to experience. But it’s also a great time for us to clear out the old stuff from our home offices. It’s a perfect chance to be able to review what you have done the past year in your office and perhaps begin to be able to start thinking about what you might want to do for the future in terms of organization. Allow me to provide you with some tips for being able to clear out the old stuff from that home office of yours.
home office_organization new year Get your home office ready for the new year!
Image via

1.   Organize everything into piles

This will make it easier for you to determine what you will need for the New Year and what you can put away into storage. That will also make it easier to help you organize them better for yourself. That way, you can take the things that are most important for the coming year and leave them in a convenient location for you to use and the other stuff can be put away where you can find them later if you so need.
home office_small space Personalize your office space
Image via

2.    Prioritize

Out of the things that you are organizing, can you determine which things are important for you to keep on hand? These can be things like new contacts to stay in touch with or financial records that you might need for the upcoming tax season. Additionally, you may want to look at the equipment you are using as well and perhaps get rid of that camera or floppy drive (or even something like that external DVD drive that you picked up cheap) that are no longer practical or haven’t been used as much as you thought you would use it.

3.    Computer clean-up

When you’ve completed the hard copy organization, its time to clear up the old clutter from your computer. This can include going through your documents, music, and photos. Take them and perhaps back them up so that you can get them off your hard drive. That may be a good thing for your computer’s speed and also being able to have more room for being able to write or do other work related tasks for the year as well.
home office_yellow chair Prioritize what you will need in your home office
Image via

4.    Purge to increase computer performance

Since you are working on your computer, perhaps it may be time to be able to clean off some of the old programs. This can be something that helps you to improve your computer’s performance and also is a great exercise in being able to choose exactly what you need to run that business or work from home venture.

5.    New organizational system

Consider devising a better organizational system when you’ve gotten rid of the things that are just taking up space. Once those things are gone, you may feel it is important to be able to have that system in place for being able to maximize the space that you have just freed up.
