If you’ve put a lot of time and money into carefully decorating your home, it can be a disappointment when you look up toward the rafters and are greeted by a boring, blank ceiling. Your walls and furniture are decorated to your exact specifications, so why leave all that white space up there? If you think there’s nothing you can do about short of attaching streamers to your ceiling fan, think again. Here are 4 ways you can can give your ceiling a makeover:

Light Fixture

The idea of attaching streamers to the ceiling fan was a joke, but there is a lot you can do to embellish lighting fixtures and take them from solely functional to a conversation piece. If you have a ceiling fan, you can paint the blades or buy new, decorative blades. If there’s no fan involved, your options abound. A simple Internet search will yield countless do-it-yourself chandelier projects and ways you can easily create an amazing light fixture to spice up a room.

Paint

If you have an inner Michelangelo, now is the time to summon those powers. But even if you aren’t ambitious enough to paint an intricate mural on your ceiling, you can still add a splash of color up there in a simpler way. Painting the ceiling one solid color is an excellent way to add color and depth to a room. If you paint it with a darker color, it can make the room feel cozier and more intimate. With a brighter color, it will feel like the walls are taller and make the room seem more spacious. To add a fun twist, try painting a pattern such as stripes or a checkerboard pattern.

Wallpaper

Just because the name includes the word “wall” doesn’t mean it can’t be adhered to the ceiling. If you want a fun design on your ceiling but lack the painting skills and patience to make it happen, wallpaper is an ideal shortcut. A patterned ceiling can look great with solid-colored walls, and wallpaper makes it easy to achieve. An alternative to wallpaper are wall decals, which you can position on the ceiling in any pattern you choose.

Crown Moulding & Coffering

While this option requires more of an investment than wallpaper or paint, the effect is dramatic and elegant. Options in this arena run the gamut from simple and sleek to embellished and ornate. Professional help will be required in this case — it takes an expert eye to assess what type of crown moulding works best for the room, depending on factors such as size and amount of moisture in the air. It might require saving up some money before making this investment, but the results are classy and well worth the price tag.
